Sergio Busquets announces retirement from Inter Miami CF after 2025 MLS season

Sergio Busquets to End His Career with Inter Miami CF at the Close of the 2025 Season

Spanish midfield legend Sergio Busquets has announced, together with Inter Miami CF, that he will retire from professional football at the conclusion of the 2025 MLS season. The announcement, made official Thursday evening, marks the end of one of the most accomplished careers in modern football.

An Iconic Career with Club and Country

Busquets made his debut in 2008 with FC Barcelona, where he played 722 official matches across 15 seasons, becoming the third-most capped player in the club’s history. His achievements with Barça include nine LaLiga titles, seven Copa del Rey trophies, three UEFA Champions League titles, and a FIFA Club World Cup. He was a core member of Barcelona’s historic midfield trio alongside Xavi Hernández and Andrés Iniesta.

With the Spanish national team, Busquets lifted the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the UEFA Euro 2012. His 143 caps rank as the third-most appearances in Spain’s history, behind only Iker Casillas and Sergio Ramos.

From Barcelona to Miami

Busquets joined Inter Miami in July 2023, reuniting with former Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba. Since then, he has played 105 matches with the club, tallying one goal and 16 assists, while helping Miami secure its first two trophies: the 2023 Leagues Cup and the 2024 Supporters’ Shield.

Inter Miami highlighted his impact in a statement: “Since his arrival in 2023, Busquets has been fundamental to the club’s growth, bringing vision, quality, leadership, and contributing to historic titles for Inter Miami CF.”

The Final Push

Currently, Miami sits third in the Eastern Conference and has already secured a playoff spot for the 2025 MLS Cup presented by Audi. With five matches left in the regular season, Busquets and Miami remain in the race for another Supporters’ Shield, trailing leaders Philadelphia Union by just five points, with two games in hand.

Should Miami advance, Busquets’ final match could be the 2025 MLS Cup final on December 6, potentially closing his career on the league’s biggest stage.
